How permissions work
Permissions are rules that PDF readers follow, such as no printing or no copying. They are stored with AES-256 encryption, but the file opens without a password.
Most readers respect them, but some programs ignore them. For real secrecy, use Protect PDF with password.
Private
Your file is processed inside your browser with qpdf, an open-source PDF library (Apache-2.0), running as WebAssembly. Passwords are used only in your browser's memory and are never saved. It is never uploaded, and nothing is saved after you close the page.

Is this the same as a password?
No. The file still opens for everyone. To stop people from opening it, use Protect PDF with password.
Is it free?
Yes. Free to use, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limits.
