What is counted
Words are counted the way word processors do: a word is a group of letters or numbers, so "don't" and "e-mail" count as one word. Chinese, Japanese and Thai text is split into words with your browser's own language rules.
Characters are shown with and without spaces, because some forms and websites count one way and some the other. Sentences end with a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark; paragraphs are separated by an empty line or a new line.
Reading and speaking time
Reading time uses about 238 words a minute, the average for adults reading silently. Choose slow or fast if your readers are different. Speaking time uses about 130 words a minute, a calm speed for talks and videos.
Private by design
Many word counters send what you type to a server. This one counts inside your browser. Your essay, cover letter or contract never leaves your device and is not saved when you close the page.

Is my text sent anywhere?
No. Counting happens inside your browser. Your text is never uploaded or saved.
Why is my count different from Word or Google Docs?
Tools treat hyphens, numbers and symbols a little differently. The difference is usually only a few words in a long text.
Is there a length limit?
You can paste or open text files up to 500 MB, which is millions of words.
Does it work for other languages?
Yes. It works for any language your browser supports, including languages without spaces between words.
