APA 7th-edition citations for books, websites and journals
This tool builds a reference-list entry in APA 7th-edition style from the fields you type: author, year, title and publisher or site name. For a book it produces Author. (Year). Title. Publisher. For a website it produces Author. (Year). Title. Site Name. For a journal article it produces Author. (Year). Title. Journal Name. Any extra notes you type, such as a URL or DOI, are appended at the end so you can paste the full reference.
Type the author as Surname, Initials, for example Smith, J. A. For two authors, join them with an ampersand, for example Smith, J. A., & Lee, B. Type the year as four digits, for example 2023, or n.d. when no date is known. Capitalize only the first word of the title and subtitle plus proper nouns, which is the APA sentence-case rule for reference titles.
Common mistakes to avoid in your reference list
The most common APA mistakes are wrong capitalisation, missing italics and misplaced punctuation. In a plain-text citation the italics cannot be shown, so when you paste into Word or Google Docs, italicise the book title and the journal name plus volume number yourself. Check that every in-text citation has a matching reference entry and that entries are sorted alphabetically by the first author's surname.
For websites, include the site name and, when the content may change over time, the URL you visited so readers can verify the source. For journal articles, add the volume, issue and page range in your notes field when you have them, and keep the DOI as a full https link. Always compare the result against your university style guide, because departments sometimes add their own rules on top of APA.
Private by design: citations without uploading
This APA citation generator runs entirely in your browser. Your author names, titles and notes are read on your own device and formatted locally with a small built-in script. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is saved after you close the page, and it works offline after the first visit. Check the live preview before you copy or download the result file.
That matters for unpublished work: thesis drafts, manuscript titles and internal project names never leave your device. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit, and you can process up to 10 files of 500 MB each in one go. Close the tab when you have finished with sensitive material.
