    How it works

    1. Paste your text

Type, paste or open a text file. Essays, articles and transcripts work well.

    2. See frequencies at once

Total words, unique words and the top list update as you type.

    3. Copy or download

Copy the frequency table or download it as a TXT file.

Totals, unique words and the top list

The counter splits your text into words using Unicode rules, so accented letters count correctly and internal apostrophes stay together in words like don't. It reports total words, unique words and the most frequent word with its count in tiles at the top, followed by a ranked list of the top words you asked for. Use it to check keyword density, spot overused fillers, compare vocabulary across drafts or summarise survey answers.

With Case sensitive off, Apple and apple count as the same word, which is right for most writing analysis. Turn it on when capitalisation matters, such as distinguishing Apple the company from apple the fruit, or when auditing code-like text. The Top words setting from 5 to 100 controls how many rows appear in the list and the download.

    Reading the frequency table

Each row shows a word and how many times it appears, ordered from most to least frequent with alphabetical tie-breaks so the list is stable. Very common words usually top the list, which is normal: focus on the content words below them to find your real topics. For keyword work, compare the top content words against the terms you intended to emphasise.

Numbers count as words when they stand alone, so years and amounts appear in the table like any other token. Punctuation is stripped from word edges before counting, and line breaks or extra spaces never create phantom words. Download the TXT report to keep a snapshot alongside each draft.

Private by design: count without uploading

This word frequency counter runs entirely in your browser. Your text is tokenised and counted on your own device with a small local script. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is saved after you close the page, and it works offline after the first visit. Check the live preview before you copy or download the report.

That makes it safe for manuscripts, interview transcripts and confidential reports you are analysing. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit, and you can process up to 10 files of 500 MB each in one go. Close the tab when you have finished with sensitive material.

    Questions

    Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. Counting happens inside your browser. Your text never leaves your device.

    How are words counted?

Words are Unicode letters and numbers with internal apostrophes kept together. Punctuation at the edges is ignored.

Why do Apple and apple count together?

Case sensitive is off by default. Turn it on to count capitalised and lowercase forms separately.

    Is it free?

Yes. Free to use, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limits.
