Chunky blocks with a tiled finish
Blockifying averages every square of your chosen size into a single flat colour, turning smooth photographs into bold mosaics of chunky pixels. Block sizes from four to sixty-four pixels span subtle texture simplification all the way to full abstraction where subjects dissolve into colour fields. The optional grid overlay draws thin dark seams between blocks, giving the finish of bathroom tiles, quilt squares or a strategy-game map.
Unlike blurring, which smears detail, blocking keeps hard edges and flat colour areas that compress beautifully and print crisply. Grid lines are drawn one pixel thin in soft translucent black, emphasising the tile structure without overwhelming the colours beneath.
Covers, placeholders and crafts
Video makers blockify thumbnails and pause screens for a stylised backdrop behind titles, while developers generate chunky placeholder art that hints at content without revealing it. Crafters go further: a blockified pet portrait with grid lines on becomes a cross-stitch or perler-bead pattern ready to follow row by row.
Large originals are fitted within 4096 pixels before blocking, flagged on the result row. Colours are true averages of each block, so the mosaic faithfully represents the palette of the source scene.
Mosaics made under your own roof
Blockifying is often used to obscure number plates, documents and faces, which makes privacy of the process itself essential. Here the averaging happens in your browser's memory on your own hardware, so the sensitive original is never shipped to an external service that might retain it.
No sign-up, no waiting line and no watermark interrupt the work. The blockified download is a new file without embedded location metadata, safe to publish wherever the redacted version is needed.
Questions
Are my photos uploaded to be blockified?
No. Blocking runs entirely in your browser, so your photos stay on your own device.
What do the grid lines do?
They draw thin translucent seams between blocks for a tiled look. Turn them off for a smooth pixel mosaic.
Does blockify hide details like blur does?
Large blocks hide detail permanently in the pixels, similar to strong pixelation. Small blocks only stylise the photo.
Is it free?
Yes. Free to use, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limits.
