    How it works

    1. Type or paste your text

Write in the box, paste from anywhere, or open a text file. Nothing is sent anywhere.

    2. See the counts at once

Sentences, words, characters and paragraphs update as you type, with abbreviations handled fairly.

    3. Copy or save the numbers

Copy the counts, or download them as a small text file.

    What counts as a sentence

A sentence ends with a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark, followed by a space, a line break or the end of the text. The counter uses your browser's own language rules when available, so Chinese, Japanese and Thai full stops such as 。!? are recognised too, and a fallback pattern covers every other browser.

Titles and short forms like Mr., Dr. and e.g. should not start a new sentence, so the abbreviation switch keeps them glued to the words that follow. Turn it off if you are analysing text where every full stop must split, such as shorthand notes or code-like writing.

    Words, characters and paragraphs

Words are counted the way word processors do: a word is a group of letters or numbers, so “don't” and “3.5” each count as one. Characters are true Unicode characters, which means an emoji counts once even though computers store it as two code units, and paragraphs are blocks of text separated by an empty line.

Use the tiles to check school limits at a glance: sentences for average sentence length, words for essay minimums, characters for social posts and forms, and paragraphs for structure. Everything updates with each keystroke, so you can trim a sentence and watch the numbers fall immediately.

    Private by design

Most online counters send your essay, cover letter or story to a server for counting, where it can be logged or kept. This counter splits sentences and counts words inside your own browser, so your writing never leaves your device and is gone for good when you close the page.

There is no account, no queue and no expiry: open the Online sentence counter when a limit matters, check your text, download the counts and close the tab. Your browser cache only keeps the app itself for offline use, never your documents.

    Questions

    Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. Counting happens inside your browser. Your text is never uploaded or saved.

Why does “Mr. Smith” count as one sentence?

The abbreviation switch keeps titles like Mr. and short forms like e.g. with their sentence. Turn it off to split after every full stop.

    Do other languages work?

Yes. The browser's sentence rules handle many languages, including Chinese, Japanese and Thai punctuation.

    Is it free?

Yes. Count as much text as you like, free, with no sign-up and no daily limits.
