Fewer bits means fewer colours: 4 gives 16 steps, 2 gives poster bands, 1 is pure black-white colour.
How it works
Add your images
Choose JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, AVIF or HEIC images to posterize.
Choose bit depth
Pick 1 to 7 bits per channel; 4 keeps detail with steps, 2 makes bold bands.
Download the results
Save each posterized PNG on its own or download them together as a ZIP.
What bit depth changes
Bit depth sets how many steps each of red, green and blue can use. Four bits allows sixteen steps per channel, two bits allows only four, and one bit allows just dark or light per channel.
Lower values create visible bands in skies and skin, which suits retro posters and pixel-art studies. Higher values near seven look almost like the original with slight stepping.
Pick the right depth
Start at four bits for a clear effect that keeps faces readable, then try two for bold graphic bands. One bit keeps only eight possible colours, useful for stamps and masks.
Depth reduction runs on-device, preserving your files’ confidentiality. Sliders update the preview locally before you save anything.
Use the poster look
Posterized images compress well and print with flat inks, good for stickers, shirts and lesson slides. Pair with Retro image for a fixed sixteen-colour palette instead of even steps.
For web-safe palettes try Web-safe image, which snaps to browser colours rather than even bands. Download each reduced PNG separately, or run a batch and grab one ZIP for all of them.
Questions
Are my images uploaded?
No. Bit reduction happens inside your browser. Your images never leave your device.
How many colours does 4 bits give?
Sixteen steps per channel, so up to 4096 combined colours. Smooth gradients show steps but photos stay recognizable.
Will detail be lost?
Yes, banding replaces smooth shading and cannot be undone. Keep the original if you may need full quality later.
Is it free?
Yes. Free to use, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limits.
