    How it works

    1. Add your images

Choose JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, AVIF or HEIC images to snap to safe colours.

    2. Snap to safe palette

Each pixel moves to the nearest web-safe step of 0, 51, 102, 153, 204 or 255 per channel.

    3. Download the results

Save each snapped PNG on its own or download them together as a ZIP.

    What web-safe means

Web-safe colours use only six steps per channel at 0, 51, 102, 153, 204 and 255, giving 216 combined colours that old browsers showed without dithering. Every pixel is moved to its nearest palette neighbour.

Skies gain visible steps and gradients turn banded, while flat logos often look unchanged because they already use safe values. The effect is a crisp nineties-web poster look.

    One click, no settings

Add images and convert: there is no slider because the palette is fixed by history. The same snap applies to all files, so sets stay consistent for comparison.

Palette snapping happens in local memory, not on external servers. Your pictures are read in this tab and only the new PNGs are offered for saving.

    When safe colours help

Use web-safe for retro pages, email graphics that must survive rough displays, or lessons about colour quantisation. It also shows which photos rely on subtle gradients that dithering once hid.

For even steps try Bit depth image, and for a sixteen-colour game look try Retro image. Download each PNG or collect them together in one ZIP.

    Questions

    Are my images uploaded?

No. Snapping happens inside your browser. Your images never leave your device.

    What are the 216 colours?

All mixes of six steps per channel: 0, 51, 102, 153, 204 and 255. That grid was safe on 256-colour displays.

    Will photos look worse?

Yes, smooth photos show banding by design. Flat graphics and icons often look fine and gain a retro feel.

    Is it free?

Yes. Free to use, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limits.
