Why grey can look better
Color sometimes distracts from what matters in a photo: faces, shapes, light and texture. Removing color turns a busy snapshot into a calm, classic image where contrast and composition carry the picture.
Grey suits portraits, street scenes and product shots with messy backgrounds. Try it on a photo that feels cluttered; if the subject pops more without color, keep the grey version.
Getting a good conversion
This tool maps every pixel to its true brightness, so reds and greens that looked different may end up the same grey. That is normal: grey has one channel where color had three.
Save as PNG to keep every shade exactly, or JPG for a smaller file to share. Your original stays untouched, so compare both versions and keep the one you like.
Private by design
The conversion runs entirely inside your browser using code downloaded with this page. Your photos are read from your own disk, changed in your own memory, and written back by you.

No. Everything runs inside your browser on your own device. Your files are never sent to us or to anyone else.
Will the grey version keep my image size?
Yes. Width and height stay exactly the same; only the colors change. Very large images over 4096 px are scaled down first so the effect stays fast.
Which format should I save as?
PNG keeps every grey shade perfectly and suits editing. JPG makes much smaller files for sharing, and WebP sits in between.
Is it free?
